It's the most important molecule you need to stay healthy and prevent disease -- yet you've probably never heard of it.

It's the secret to prevent aging, cancer, heart disease, dementia, and more, and necessary to treat everything from autism to Alzheimer's disease.

There are more than 76,000 medical articles about it -- but your doctor doesn't know how address the epidemic deficiency of this critical life-giving molecule.

What is it?

I'm talking about the mother of all antioxidants, the master detoxifier and maestro of the immune system.

It is GLUTATHIONE (pronounced "gloota-thigh-own").

The good news is that your body produces its own glutathione.

The bad news is that poor diet, pollution, toxins, medications, stress, trauma, aging, infections, and radiation all deplete your glutathione.

This leaves you susceptible to unrestrained cell disintegration from oxidative stress and free radicals, and to infections and cancer.  And your liver gets overloaded and damaged, making it unable to do its job of detoxification.

Then what happens?

Well, let me tell you what I've learned.

In treating chronically ill patients with Functional Medicine for more than 10 years, I have discovered that glutathione deficiency is found in nearly all very ill patients.

These include people with chronic fatigue syndrome, heart disease, cancer, chronic infections, autoimmune disease, diabetes, autism, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, arthritis, asthma, kidney problems, liver disease, and more.

At first I thought that this was just a coincidental finding, but over the years I have come to realize that our ability to produce and maintain a high level of glutathione is critical to recovery from nearly all chronic illness -- and to preventing disease and maintaining optimal health and performance.

And so have the authors of 76,000 medical articles on glutathione!

==>  So what exactly is glutathione?

Glutathione is a very simple molecule that is produced naturally all the time in your body.

It is a combination of three simple building blocks of protein or amino acids -- cysteine, glycine, and glutamine.

The secret of its power is the sulfur (SH) chemical groups it contains.  Sulfur is a sticky, smelly molecule.  It acts like fly paper and all the bad things in the body stick onto it, including free radicals and toxins like mercury and other heavy metals.

Normally glutathione is recycled in the body -- except when the toxic load becomes too great.  And that explains why we are in such trouble.

In my practice, I test the genes involved in glutathione metabolism. These are the genes involved in producing enzymes that allow the body to create and recycle glutathione in the body.

These genes have many names, such as GSTM1, GSTP1, and more.

So why are these genes impaired in some people?

Well, humans evolved in a time before the 80,000 toxic industrial chemicals of today were introduced into our world, before electromagnetic radiation was everywhere, and before we polluted our skies, lakes, rivers, oceans, and teeth with mercury and lead.

That is why most people survived with just the basic version of the genetic detoxification software encoded in our DNA, which is mediocre at ridding the body of toxins.

We just didn't need more.

Who knew we would be poisoning ourselves and eating a processed, nutrient-depleted diet?

Because of this, almost of half of the population now has a limited capacity to get rid of toxins -- they are missing GSTM1 function.

Nearly all my very sick patients (including me, which is why I became mercury poisoned and suffered from chronic fatigue syndrome) are missing this function. This is the one-third of our population that suffers from chronic disease.

==>  So why is glutathione so important?

Glutathione recycles antioxidants.

You see, dealing with free radicals is like handing off a hot potato.  They get passed around from vitamin C to vitamin E to lipoic acid and then finally to glutathione which cools off the free radicals and recycles the other antioxidants.

Then the body can "reduce" or regenerate another protective glutathione molecule.  And we are back in business.

The problem occurs when we are overwhelmed with too much oxidative stress or too many toxins.

Then the glutathione becomes depleted, leading us toward illness.

We can no longer protect ourselves against free radicals, infections, or cancer and we can't get rid of toxins, leading to further sickness.

But that's not all.

Glutathione is also critical in helping your immune system do its job of fighting infections and preventing cancer.  That's why studies show that it can help in the treatment of AIDS.

Glutathione is also the most critical and integral part of your detoxification system.  All the toxins stick onto glutathione, which then carries them into the bile and the stool -- and out of your body.

And lastly, it also helps us reach peak mental and physical function. Research has shown that raised glutathione levels decrease muscle damage, reduce recovery time, increase strength and endurance, and shift metabolism from fat production to muscle development.

If you are sick or old or are just not in peak shape, you likely have glutathione deficiency.

In fact, the top British medical journal, "The Lancet," found the highest glutathione levels in healthy young people, lower levels in healthy elderly, lower still in sick elderly, and the lowest of all in the hospitalized elderly. (i)

Keeping yourself healthy, boosting your performance, preventing disease and aging well depends on keeping your glutathione levels high.

I'll say it again.

Glutathione is so important because it is responsible for keeping so many of the keys to UltraWellness optimized.

It is critical for immune function and controlling inflammation.  It is the master detoxifier and the body's main antioxidant, protecting our cells and making our energy metabolism run well.

Now, the good news.

==>  You can do many things to increase this natural and critical molecule in your body.

You can eat glutathione-boosting foods.

You can exercise.

You can take glutathione-boosting supplements.

FOODS

* Sulfur-rich foods. The main ones in the diet are garlic, onions, and the cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, kale, collards, cabbage, cauliflower, watercress, etc.).

* Bioactive whey protein. This is great source of cysteine and the amino acid building blocks for glutathione synthesis.  As you know I am not a big fan of dairy. But this is an exception -- with a few warnings.  The whey protein MUST be bioactive and made from non-denatured proteins (denatured means the breakdown of the normal protein structure).  Choose non-pasteurized and industrially produced milk that contains no pesticides, hormones, or antibiotics.  Immunocal is a prescription bioactive non-denatured whey protein that is even listed in the Physician's Desk Reference.

EXERCISE

* Exercise boosts your glutathione levels and thereby helps boost your immune system, improve detoxification, and enhance your body's own antioxidant defenses.  Start slow and build up to 30 minutes a day of vigorous aerobic exercise like walking or jogging, or play various sports.  Strength training for 20 minutes 3 times a week is also helpful.

SUPPLEMENTS

It would be easy just to take glutathione as a pill. But the body digests protein -- and you don't get the benefits.  The production and recycling of glutathione in the body also requires many different nutrients.

Here are the main supplements that need to be taken consistently to boost glutathione.

(In fact, besides taking a multivitamin and fish oil, supporting my glutathione levels is the most important thing I do every day for my health.)

* N-acetyl-cysteine. This has been used for years to help treat asthma and lung disease and to treat people with life-threatening liver failure from Tylenol overdose. In fact, I first learned about it in medical school and while working in the emergency room.  It is even given now to prevent kidney damage from dyes used during x-ray studies.

* Alpha lipoic acid. This is a close second to glutathione in importance in our cells and is involved in energy production, blood sugar control, brain health, and detoxification.  The body usually makes it, but given all the stresses we are under, we often become depleted.

* Methylation nutrients (folate, vitamins B6 and B12). These are perhaps the most critical to keep the body producing glutathione.  Methylation and the production and recycling of glutathione are the two most important biochemical functions in your body (see my blogs on methylation for more details).  Take folate (especially in the active form of 5 methyltetrahydrofolate), B6 (in active form of P5P), and B12 (in the active form of methylcobalamin).

* Selenium. This important mineral helps the body recycle and produce more glutathione.

* A family of antioxidants including vitamins C and E (in the formed of mixed tocopherols), work together to recycle glutathione.

* Milk thistle (silymarin) has long been used in liver disease and helps boost glutathione levels.

So follow this plan, and see how it works for you.

Now I'd like to hear from you...

Had you ever heard of this important nutrient before?

Have you tried any of the advice in this article?

I have long been aware of the importance of glutathione. You certainly are doing a great service to your readers. Unlike others in the field you don't seem to be driven solely by the profit motive. Keep up the good work.

I have been aware of gluthathione for a long time. I have had breast cancer and started to use a produce called immunocal. I also boosted up my supplements and my diet was mainly vegetables and very healthy with no meat.

A year later, I had ovarian cancer and was very discouraged that this product did not assist in preventing the ovarian cancer. I drink a vegetable juice every day plus my supplements are mostly everyything that you discussed.

Still working on beating this disease and now am in the process of taking megadoses of vitamin c intravenously.

My blood work is very good except for some anemia. Would appreciate any comments you might have.

I appreciate the struggle you are having. Have you considered other alternative methods such as Vit. B-17 [aka Amygdalin, Laetrile] treatments? Google search for information regarding this supplement. There are loads of information available and you don't have to go to Mexico either. Also, are you doing the Ultrametabolism diet? I find a lot of similarities with this diet to Macrobiotics. The diet is definitely alkalizing in nature.
I have worked with cancer patients with very stubborn disease who responded well to oxygen therapy [such as a product called Aerobic-7] and the use of enzymes as well.
You are on the right track; you just haven't found what will work for you just yet. Keep doing what you are doing, but keep looking for the missing link to deal with your situation. Freeing yourself of depression is also a big factor in achieivng health...

I have read up on everything I can and I carefully watch what I eat, drink and take supplements...

My PH level is 8 which I thought was quite alkalizing. I am going to Hippocrates institute this coming week and will formally take the wheatgrass, raw foods and juices to see if there is something I am missing. They also have other techniques that will detoxify.

I have taken chemo last year and do not want to do it again but I keep on fighting off my traditional background even though I have been doing alternative methods for years.

I don't believe it is just one thing that can stop cancer but it is very depressing to try many things and cancer keeps on returning.

I will see what happens in the next three weeks with the detoxification program and raw foods...

Susan, the cancer patients I'ne known that did well with alternative treatments had been on medication to help with depression by increasing levels of serotonin [SSRI's]. I have seen tremendous results with the addition of the O2 therapy. I would definitely check out Vit. B-17 [Laetrile][whose therapy includes the additon of emulsified Vit. A and enzyme therapy.] None of the above therapies is expensive...There is also Poly MVA which has proven results in boosting the immune system. I sense fear and frustration in your blog response, and while this is understandable, it could be thwarting some of the progress you so desire. Making peace with the enemy may be part of the cure. Surround yourself with "healers". i.e. individuals who are rooting with you for full recovery! Best wishes to you! Believe in success!

I know how frustrating and expensive it can be when you have an illnes and want to get to the root of the problem instead of just puting band-aids on it with conventional medicine and creating more toxicity.
I have found Immunocal to be a proven way to raise glutathione levels, as well as get rid of toxins on a daily basis and help modulate the immune system. This is also a proven natural therapy to treat cancer and lessen the toxic effects of chemo. Please email me at: lorrainecompletehealth@shaw.ca and I can give you more info and tell you where you can purchase at a discount.

      Dear Susan

I am sure you are doing everything to help yourself but sometimes help has to come from another treatment... In Austria, they treat cancer - next to your excellent actions - a very good way using the fact that cancer-cells love sugar....

      1. Get insuline injections to lower your blood-sugar level
      2. Treat a baxter with glucose with chemotherapy
      3. Get your baxter with this treated glucose into your venes
      4. Treat the cancer cells of the borders with hyperthermie (depth-warmth).

By using the insulin-injections, your body becomes poor of sugar and cancer cells are very hungry for sugar. Than these cells explode as the chemotherapie is not in your whole body but only in the baxter but very concentrated... and just explode... The rest of the cells which are surviving are being destroyed by hyperthermie.

If you want to add some additional treatment for your existing good cells: treat them with magnetic field to get them stronger...

This is the way the clinic Proleben in Austria is working with succes (www.prolebenklinik-igls.at) and have I got this information during a seminar from Dr. Daudert (head of this clinic).

Warm regards and a better health wishs you

      Reinhard

As an R.N. who has been interested in nutrition for many years I totally agree with your information on glutathione. I've been taking N-Acetyl cysteine 600 mgs twice daily [with a total of 2000 mgs. of Vit. C, absolutely necessary, btw, if you do take this supplement]. It is a powerful mucolytic and it helps to clear my lungs of mucous. It is also antiviral as well. I haven't had a respiratory infection in a couple of years.

I have been a supporter of the use of Milk Thistle as well and have seen people cured of psoriasis just adding this to their diet.

I started your Ultrametabolism program just 10 days ago, after fighting food cravings for years and watching my weight creep up to 188 lbs with the beginning of arthritis symptoms and other age related problems that couldn't be solved no matter how many supplements I took. With no feelings of deprivation at all I have lost 8 lbs. in 10 days, my overall mood is less anxious and much much more peaceful. The yoga stretches have helped the muscle aches, and I don't have the constant hunger pangs. The last part is the one thing that I could never get a handle on. The biggest problem I believe was a hidden allergy to wheat gluten and sugar. I feel like my life is much more in control. It's like seeing the world through a whole new set of eyes. Even my sense of taste has changed. I am experiencing subtleties and nuances of flavors that I didn't know existed. I never knew that seaweed could taste so good, for example. Your program has been a gift to me. Thank you from the deeepest part of my heart!

What does non-denatured mean? Not pasteurized?

I use "Whey Healthier" whey protein concentrate from Mercola.com. The label says it's biologically active, but not "non-denatured". How do I find out if it's "non-denatured?

Is there a list of non-denatured whey products/suppliers someplace?

After a bad winter with bronchitis and sinus infections, I started taking N-Acetyl-l-systeine NAC supplement. I take 600 mg. twice a day. This has been a tremendous help to me.

I do not have the excess mucus problem that I used to have and am able to manage my allergy and asthma problems much better than before. I still have allergies and must take allergy shots, which have been successful.

I have had just one sinus infection (and no bronchitis)since I started taking NAC. And that one was very minor only lasting 2 days.

To anyone that has asthma and allergy problems I would highly recommend taking NAC supplements, especially if you are plagued with excess mucus production.

You can buy these supplements at any quality health food store. Milk Thistle is usually sold in most grocery stores and it's cheap! Power Herbs sells theirs for less than $7 for a month's supply and I think they call it Liver Support Formula.

Life extension Foundation, www.LEF.org, sells all of these supplements online. They have a product called Life Extension Mix which has 99% of everything you need in it. The only thing missing is gamma tocopheral, an essential Vit. E.

        Hi Elaine;

Sprouts are not full of toxins - they're very good for you! So long as the sprouts on your grocery store's shelf are crisp and green they should be fine. If you go the International Sprout Growers Association website (isga-sprouts.org) you can find out more information about sprouts and I'm sure they can also refer you to a reputable grower in your area. Enjoy!

Hi to all... I have been in treatment for Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue for a year now and have had great success with the treatment plan so far. In the beginning of my treatment I had 28 vials of blood drawn and many issues arrised from those tests that needed to be treated. My doctor was writing out the prescriptions and as she was telling me about them I would ask how hard they were going to be on my body; I said I don't process meds well. She immediately wrote me out a prescription for a nebulizer and Glutathione. She told me that for us "poor metabilizers" their course of treatment was to use Glutathione through a nebulizer 2x a week. She stated that there are few other ways to get Glutathione into the body in the amounts I need to recover. By inhaling the Glutathione, it is processed in the lungs and is able to go about it's job without getting stuck in the digestive system. I tried the Glutathione and immediately noticed a difference in how I felt. I have been using the nebulizer now for 9 months or so and the brown "age spots" on my hands and face are almost gone, I can tolerate medications better, and I have more energy than I did (I can tell when it's time to nebulize because I get a little run down).

I have been following UltraSimple and UltraMetabolism for a month now and have really seeen a change in my body. I haven't seen much weight loss because I believe my lack of Cortisol production (saliva test) is preventing that from happening. Nonetheless, I am sticking to UltraMetabolism because I am in it for the long haul.

Dr. Hyman, is this one of the ways, in addition to the diet, you prescribe Glutathione to your patients?

This is great information to know. However the information on supplements is not very helpful because there are no dosage amounts. I know it varies per person but it would be helpful to have a ballpark figure. The other thing is if I take all the supplements that are recommended for all things I will be taking 50 pills a day. Can you get most of these nutrients in a really good multi-vitamin and what would you suggest?

    Dear Dr. Hyman:

I have just started to read Ultrametabolism and plan to use what I am learning to lose weight and feel better but also I believe it can help with my son.

I have a Son (1year and 9 months) with Down Syndrome. Reading your book and your article about glutathione made me think that maybe a specif diet oriented could help with the metabolic imbalances that kids with Down Syndrome have do to the extra chromosome.
Following I copy a paragraph writen by:Ginger Houston-Ludlam that explains a little of what I am talking about:

"This is one of the places where the extra chromosome 21 comes into play. Chromosomes are made of DNA. Because there is an extra copy of that chromosome in each cell of a person with Down syndrome, there is more DNA busy making proteins. More copies of proteins are produced than are needed for the normal chemical reactions that occur in a cell. In some cases, these extra proteins can cause metabolic imbalances, which lead to too much of some chemicals and not enough of others in the body.

A good example (and a fairly simple one to understand, but devastating in its effects) is the SOD gene, which is on chromosome 21. SOD stands for superoxide dismutase and it is half of a two-step process to take a poisonous form of oxygen, called superoxide, and turn it into oxygen and water. SOD, because it lives on chromosome 21, is made in larger quantity (the term used for this is "overexpressed") than normal. The enzyme for the other half of this two-step process, glutathione peroxidase, is not overexpressed because it is on a different chromosome. (There is another enzyme that can work in place of glutathione peroxidase, called catalase. You may see either or both of these enzymes mentioned in when this process is discussed.) There is an imbalance, then. In step one, SOD takes the superoxide and turns it into hydrogen peroxide. But in step two, there isn’t enough glutathione peroxidase to break the hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water fast enough. This leaves excess hydrogen peroxide hanging around in the cells. Unfortunately, hydrogen peroxide alone, if in a high enough concentration, is toxic to cells, especially nerve cells. This, incidentally, is why we use hydrogen peroxide on wounds. It is toxic to bacteria cells too."

Have you evee had any experience with patiences with Down Syndrome?

All the supplements that you recomend have the dosage for adults, can they be given to kids?

How will I know that I am giving the correct balance to my son? Which tests may be done to know how is his metabolism working?

Do you have telephone consultations? If yes how do they work?

    Thank you,

    Jannette

Yes, I am actually taking MaxGxl as well, now for 2 months and my husband for over 3 months. Well, how can I say that, I just got my life back. Meannig, runnig after two little kids can be tiring. Well after one month of taking that I starded getting up early in the morning, which I haven't done in years and staying till 11 still running with full steam. And I play golf every day, walking and pulling the cart. So one think that I have noticed is having that ENERGY!!!!
To my amusment my husbend is getting up early as well which he newer did, since I know him, he would newer get up early.
Another change I have noticed is my neck pain and headache that is gone. During the golf season I used to go for deep massage every month. Right now I am in great shape, no pain. Apparently MaxGxl(glutathione) helps arthritis pain to be less if not zero.
What they say this is the precursor of glutathione so it stays in the body, cells, when if you take it as food is digested very quicly, and nothing stays in.

I have been aware of the benifits of glutathione for over a year as the company Lifewave is making a non-transdermal patch (meaning no drugs or chemicals enter the body) to stimulate the body's own production of glutathione with clinical studies showing an increase of up to 300% in 24 hours!
After going through a time of detox as glutathione is helping the body to detox heavy metal, I feel wonderful!
And would recommand this product to anyone willing to improve their health!

    Aloha Mark,
There is something new that I have heard about but cannot find the source for something called GBF. I heard from someone on the East Coast about it. Have you heard about it yet?
